Wizard World Austin -- and a big ol' mess o' updates

Tuesday, November 06, 2012 - 09:50 AM

I just wanted to take a moment to thank everyone who came out to say hello at my first-ever Texas convention at the end of October. Aside from Wizard World Philadelphia, which is right in my back yard, I hadn't attended a Wizard-run convention in ages, and I have to tell you guys, they're nothing like I remember from those years past. I was exhibiting with Scott Kurtz, and we were greeted by and introduced to just about every Wizard executive and manager in town for the show. And they remembered names, and asked opinions, and took interest. I'm telling you, I'm really looking forward to possibly attending more Wizard-run shows in 2013, so if there's one in your area, be sure to leave a comment and tell me where it is so I can add it for consideration.

Hurricane Sandy

I was still in Texas as the hurricane neared the east coast. As some of you know, I live in Philadelphia, and we were right in the path of the storm's eye for many of the projections. I was unable to get an earlier flight into town, and as a result, I wasn't able to get home until Wednesday - Halloween.

But everything turned out A-OK.

My in-laws were in town to help with the kids. I had left for Texas a week earlier to work with Scott on a special project we'll be working on in 2013. So they were around to help my wife do all the storm-prep stuff she had to do... and to basically make the entire even less scary for everyone involved.

As for me, I was made to feel right at home by Scott's brother, Brian, and his wife, Regean, whose hospitality was incredible. I hung out at their house for an extra two-and-a-half days as I waited for flights to resume into Philadelphia International Airport, and they were amazingly kind.

Plus, I got to know Scott's dad, Frank Kurtz, much better, and found out that he's become a regular reader of "Evil Inc." That was worth the trip right there.

Oh! -- And I discovered "Breaking Bad" on Netflix, and in about two weeks, I've caught up to the beginning of the Fourth Season.

Poor Gale.

Delta Airlines

And can I just give a quick shout-out to Delta Airlines? I had to change my flight about three times between Sunday and Monday, and they were friendly, efficient and helpful as hell. When I'd call, the automated response would tell me that there was a two-hour wait -- and then it would offer to call me back when it was about to be my turn in line! And the system worked!

I love the way they fly.

Halloween

Oh, yeah... Halloween. I landed in Philly at 11:50 p.m. ... just enough time to say "trick or--". Sadly, there was no Dr. Strange or Doc Ock cosplay for me.

But when I got into the house around twelve-thirty, there was a big pile of Laffy Taffy waiting for me on the dining-room table. Life is good.

Monthly Comic Download

There was one "casualty" from the storm and that was November's download. As you may remember, I have been making each month's strips available at the beginning of every month since late Spring. I'm finishing up the last week of November right now, and I hope to make the monthly comic available at the beginning of next week for those of you who are still interested.

I've been following you for a long time, Brad, and I don't post at all, but this thought just keeps popping up, so I have to say:

You are Mr. Nice Guy.

I hope you understand that I mean that sincerely and in the best way possible. Not only do I enjoy your comics and projects, but I get this warm, fuzzy vibe from your posts, man.

Maybe it's because you're a Dad (married myself, with four kids:13,11,7,and 5), or maybe it's just the community roots (love Phables) but you are my level-headed, steady-as-she-goes, wise mentor in the webcomics world.

Thought it was about time I said so, and I thought about e-mailing you, but then decided it should really be a bit more public.

Thanks, man. Keep it up.

In Response to twp3pf2 (#62356):

Ha! Catch me on a Sunday night after a three-day comic convention some time. Your ears will *burn.* :)

Hell, let's face it, we're not responsible for anything; including the things we say, do, or think. And if you sue us because you think we are? Well, we're not responsible for that either.
