Stand-Up Comedy from a Sit-Down Cartoonist (5 comments)

Stand-Up Comedy from a Sit-Down Cartoonist

Wednesday, June 27, 2012 - 11:06 AM

My wife's Father's Day gift to me this year was to help me cross something off my bucket list: Stand-up comedy.

The gift was an enrollment in Brad Trackman's Philadelphia Comedy Academy, a seminar series that meets for three Sunday mornings and culminates in a special showcase this Saturday afternoon at 3:30.

I've always wanted to try stand-up. I've always wanted to see if I could write a decent monologue and deliver it onstage. I guess I'm gonna find out this weekend, for better or for worse.

Wanna get tickets? They're available here.

My advice? Come for the showcase Saturday afternoon, and then stick around to see Greg Fitzsimmons that night. If you're a fan of the Howard Stern radio show, you're familiar with Greg's sharp comedy.

Wanna take Brad's tremendously informative and entertaining seminar? He's doing another in Philly and one in Washington D.C.

I wish you all the best. My attempts at standup were both drunken fiascoes during open-mike nights at a local pub. No prep, no forethought, and fueled by too many drinks. Gee, and Robin Williams made it look so easy...

Hey Brad, how were the classes? I didn't do stand-up... my preference was improv comedy. I took a bunch of improv classes at the DC Improv Comedy Club.

I didn't see if Brad's (the other one) Washington DC class was going to be at the DC Improv but if it is, he picked a good venue. That place is managed by a terrific lady, Allyson.

Hope you enjoyed your stand-up classes. I loved my improv classes and have been meaning to go back - once i find more time. LOL!

Long-time reader, first time commenter, Brad. So what was important enough that I'd register for an account? This was:

Don't leave us hanging like this, Brad! How'd your stand-up gig go?

Ha! I'm sorry about that, Andy. I tweeted about it at @Guigar, but I didn't follow-up here.

It went really, really good! I got some very solid laughs and didn't freeze up or choke (noticeably).

There is video, and I will post it as soon as I receive it. :)

Ah. I'm not on the Twitter, so I guess that explains how I missed it.

But well done, sir! Kudos to you for doing so well at standup--something I've thought about but never tried--and then more kudos (plus a cherry) on top of those for attempting it in the first place!
