A Scanner Dorkly: Spring Catch-Up Edition

Thursday, April 08, 2010 - 12:00 AM

Between Emerald City Comic Con and PAX East -- and prepping for C2E2 and Calgary -- I've been a bit crunched for time, and unfortuantely the A Scanner Dorkly column has been a casualty of that. But things are starting to even out now. So here's the column for the week -- with a couple catch-up items at the end. Click on the thumbnails for a full-page excerpt.

Hulks Smash!

Hulk #21

In a climactic moment in Fall of the Hulks, Doc Samson uses the Cathexis Ray that turned Rick Jones into A-Bomb to mutate the Mighty Avengers, the Fantastic Four and the Uncanny X-Men into Hulk-versions of themselves.
Aaaaaaand completely lost my interest in the series all at the same time.

Pretty strong stuff, Cathexis Rays...

"Please leave a message. Or don't."

Amazing Spider-Man #627

Meanwhile, in Amazing Spider-Man #627, Web Head phones Doctor Strange for assistance in sussing out who has felled the mighty Juggernaut. Unfortunately, the good doctor is out of the office and Spidey gets Doc's faithful manservant, Wong, instead.
Wong: Regretfully, the doctor is unavailable. He is... on another call. But he left word that you have the wherewithall to accomplish what you wish. Good luck, Spider-Man. May the Vishanti be with you.

What we didn't see was what I imagine happened hours earlier in the Sanctum Sanctorum:
Wong: Going out, sir?
Dr. Strange: Yes, Wong. You know what to do if anyone calls, right?
Wong: Standard Operating Procedure, I assume, doctor.
Strange: Yup. Tell 'em they have the wherewithall to handled what ever crisis they're facing on their own, slap a Vishanti blessing on them, and get them off the phone. And if that cheapskate Namor tries to reverse the charges again, do not hesitate to go all Agamatto on his behind.

The Multiverse is back. Again.

JLA #43

I guess we're still supposed to be surprised that the multiverse is back. Again. Still.

Hickman wins with four queens

Fantastic Four #577

The Universal Inhumans are introduced, and the rulers of each of the four tribes share a common trait (aside from sharing the forehead-mounted tuning fork of Black Bolt)... estrogen. Also, in case you missed it, the Dire Wraiths (anyone remember the Ditko classic, Rom, Spaceknight?) are one of the tribes of Universal Inhumans.

Blackest Night

Blackest Night #8

Blackest Night reached a thunderous conclusion with Issue 8, and, predictably, the return of many formerly dead heroes and villains. Among the most surprising of the returns was Deadman. Also making a surprise return was Carter Hall's love, Shiera, (and Carter "Hawkman" Hall himself). Not making comebacks were Elongated Man and his wife, Sue. And Batman. And the traditions of DC resurrections.
Hal Jordan: I think dead is dead from here on out--
Barry Allen: Except for him [Bruce Wayne]. That Black Lantern Batman didn't recognize any of us. It wasn't Bruce. Tim Drake is right. Bruce is alive.

In praise of Amanda Conner

Power Girl #10

Standing on the floor of PAX East, I had the following conversation with Fleen's Gary Tyrrell:
Me: I'll submit that Power Girl is one of the strongest monthly titles on the stands today. I'll put it up against any title you care to name.
Gary Tyrrell: And it's not just the obligatory cheesecake. It this. [Gary "vogues."] Amanda Conner's ability to masterfully convey facial expressions.

Which leads me to two points:

If you haven't seen Gary "vogue," take the opportunity to do so as soon as possible. Trust me.

He's absolutely right. As proof, check out the sample to the right as a young boy asks Power Girl's help in asking out a girl he's sweet on. That, friends and neighbors, is an expression that speaks volumes.

But seriously. Gary. Vogue. Be there.

"We'll upgrade the rest later."

Mighty Avengers #35

Also, in earlier comics news, Hank Pym earns that title of "Earth's Scientist Supreme" once again by grafting flesh-and-bones limbs onto his robotic crush, Jocasta.
Pym: They're flesh aspect limbs. When you're ready, we'll upgrade the rest.

Master of disguise

Deadpool: Merc With A Mouth #9

And finally, Deadpool may not be the Scientist Supreme, but he can still pull off a brilliant disguise. As long as he's trapped on a zombie world. All he needed was a little help from the zombie-head Deadpool. And a couple of eye holes. And some very, very dopey adversaries.
