|This is the second of two installments of the weekly "A Scanner Dorkly" column. There were so many notable moments in comics last week, that it was too much for just one column. Here are some of the highlights. Click on the thumbnails for a full-page excerpt.|
In the kick-off issue to the new Doomwar series, T'challa entreats the X-Men to help him free his wife, former-X-Man Storm, who has been imprisoned by a group of Wakandan dissidents, the Desturi, who now run T'challa's home nation.
Scott Summers explains that, since the X-Men have only just recently created their new home -- a man-made land structure just outside the San Francisco Bay -- the X-Men's involvement in a move of international aggression would put his fledgling island Utopia into dangerous waters. He tells T'challa that he could not sanction the involvement of the X-Men in such a move. As T'challa plans to depart, workers load supplies into jets. He tells Scott that he understands the completely. After all, "A true leader must consider the big picture... you must understand that sometimes sacrifices must be made for the benefit of the whole."
To the surprise of no one, Scott lays his hand on the Wakandan ruler's shoulder:
T'challa, I only said I can't sanction the X-Men's involvement... I can't dissuade them from following their hearts.
And T'challa turns to see a jet cram-packed with X-Men (well, Colossus, Nightcrawler and Wolverine) ready to ride to the rescue of their comrade, Storm.
Blackest Night Flash #3
Poor Owen Mercer. He's so desperate to try to revive the zombified version of his father, the original Captain Boomerang, George "Digger" Harkness, that he's been throwing people into a pit for the zombie to feed on. The Rogues, led by Captain Cold, happens upon the scene, setting up the always-tricky conflict between officers of the same rank.
Captain Cold: How many you shove down there?
With that, Cold pushes Boomerang over the edge of the pit. When he gets to his feet, he finds his zombie-father waiting for him.
And now there are two zombie Captains Boomerang.
Nose Job, Red Shulk Style
Incredible Hulk #607
Meanwhile, as Fall of the Hulks unfolded last week, Red She Hulk laid the smack down on the Avengers and Young Avengers. She wins in a rout, clobbering the Earth's Mightiest.
Stature: She broke my nose.
Y'know that guy... the one who always has to one-up you in a conversation? If you had a slice of cake for breakfast, he had a whole cake. Fresh out of the oven. Baked by faeries. Naked ones. That guy? Turns out, Vision is That Guy. Even has to concoct a whole official-sounding scale to drive his point home.
How's THAT for a Topper?
The Leader's gang of not-so-merry thieves have successfully made it to the one-quarter mark of their goal of eliminating the "eight smartest men."
(I'll say it so you don't have to: What about the eight smartest women?)
They have Reed Richards and Doctor Doom.
And to make matters worse, they plan to steal the contents of the Eight's brains with... "The Liddleville Technology!"
The had been planning to use Lidsville Technology, but Hoodoo and M.O.D.O.K. have... unresolved issues.
Your Mission, Should You Choose To Accept It...
Dark Avengers #14
As the final showdown between the Sentry and Norman Osborn brews, Norm decides he's going to need an edge. And that means hitting Sentry where it hurts: His wife. Osborn walks in on Bullkeye, busy sharpening arrows for his next "Hawkeye" appearance.
Bullseye: What the hell was THAT today?
Looks like Sentry's wife, Lindsay, is going to be in the Bullseye. Then Bullseye can go back to being in... aw, nevermind again.
And the Best Moment in Comics Last Week. Or Maybe Ever
Power Girl #9
Speaking of long-simmering show-downs, Satana finally squares off against Power Girl in a grudge match over the Kryptonian bombshell's handing of Satana's (ugh) love interest, Ultra Humanite.
Satana threatens defeat over Power Girl by slapping a mysterious device over her primary power source. No words this time. Just click.
