POLL: Five to Pull / One to Pass: Jan. 27

Wednesday, January 27, 2010 - 12:00 AM

Amazing Spider-Man #618
Creative team: Story by Dan Slott; Art by Marcos Martin

Villain to Watch: Mysterio

They say: How long can Mysterio play with Spidey's head before the web-slinger finally snaps?! The mind games keep ratcheting up as the body count goes up, down, and...into the negatives? Some bad guys just won't die and others can't stay dead! So which long-thought deceased Spider-Man character is back now?! It may only be January, but get ready for the most unbelievable Spider-Man moment of the year!

I say: Can we just take a moment to appreciate -- beyond the wonderful Dan Slott writing -- the amazing Ditkoesque touches being performed throughout this arc by Marcos Martin. The illustrations... the compositions... the colors... it's simply astounding. Paired with Slott's imaginative tale -- which pays loving homage to the Lee/Ditko years in a way that I think does justice to both creative giants -- this has been a rare treat.

Avengers Initiative #32
Creative team: Story by Christos N. Gage; Art by Rafa Sandoval

Villain to Watch: Taskmaster

They say: After Civil War, the members of the Initiative were recruited with promises of glory... fame... wealth... redemption. But all things come with a price - and now it's time to pay in blood as the entire Initiative find themselves fighting for their lives in an all-out war against Thor and the Asgardians! With the Dark Avengers as their allies and immortal gods as their enemies, the most brutal event in Marvel history is about to ignite, and these Avengers are caught in the middle! And for some, this will be their final stand.

I say: Ever since Seige #1, my abiding love for Taskmaster has only deepened. And that's bad news for ol' Skullhead. Because if they're making us identify with him so much, that can only mean his days are numbered. Especially since it looks as if that path leads directly to a confrontation with a particularly peeved Thunder God. Nonetheless, I'm completely dedicated to seeing where this is going to end up.

Fall of the Hulks Red Hulk #1
Creative team: Story by Jeff Parker; Art by Carlos Rodrigues

Villain to Watch: Red Hulk

They say: "Fall of the Hulks" continues in this all-new series! What secrets will be revealed? What plans has the Red Hulk been hiding from everyone? And what does all of this have to do with the Cosmic Hulk robot!? Don't miss this thrilling first chapter by Jeff Parker (Agents of Atlas, The Hood) and Carlos Rodrigues (Thunderbolts)!

I say: I'm starting to cool a bit on the Fall of the Hulks storyline. I'm putting this on my Pull List with a note. I'm promised Red Hulk secrets. And if there ain't some revealin' going on, I'm pullin' out.

Fantastic Four #575
Creative team: Story by Jonathan Hickman; Art by Dale Eaglesham

Villain to Watch: High Evolutionary

They say: Kicking off the world-spanning new adventures of the Fantastic Four, this is part one of the Prime Elements arc: The Hidden City of the High Evolutionary! Featuring the return of the Mole Man, the architecture of the underworld, and the smartest Moloid you'll ever meet. Don't miss it!

I say: Does it get better than a Mole Man FF story? I submit that, in the hands of this creative team particularly, it does not. In the same way that Amazing Spider-Man is currently in full-genuflect to Lee/Ditko, Hickman and Eaglesham seem to be doing the same bit towards those golden years when Lee and Kirby helmed Marvel's first family.

Justice League of America #41
Creative team: Story by James Robinson; Art by Mark Bagley

Villain to Watch: TBA

They say: Be here for the start of a new Justice League era! The JLA have been getting a pounding in the last couple of months, but NO MORE! The team regroups with a new roster that will transcend time and space! Make way for the World's Greatest Heroes - Batman, Green Lantern, the Atom, Green Arrow, Donna Troy, the Guardian, Cyborg, Mon-El, Starfire, Dr. Light and, yes, Congorilla! This issue features two covers by Mark Bagley which are seperately orderable. Cover A features Green Lantern and Green Arrow; Cover B features Batman and Mon-El.

I say: I don't see Plastic Man's name on that list. Congorilla... Congorilla's name is mentioned, but no Plastic man. I'm thisclose to putting this under "One To Pass." With three former Titans -- Donna Troy, Cyborg and Starfire -- on the roster, though, my interest is captured. For now.

Sheesh. Congorilla.

...And One To Pass...

Justice League Cry for Justice #6
Creative team: Story by James Robinson; Art by Mauro Cascioli

Villain to Watch: Prometheus

They say: Prometheus reveals an even greater threat to the team than they thought possible!

How will this new crisis change the face of the DC Universe?

Find out in the penultimate chapter of this groundbreaking miniseries event!

I say: This thing is still going on?

...Trading Up...

Least I Could Do #3: My Eyes Are Up Here
Creative team: Story by Ryan Sohmer; Art by Lar deSouza

They say: Love means never having to say you're sorry. Casual relations means never having to say anything at all! A sex-obsessed narcissist who uses his charm, humor, and vivid imagination to enjoy life as much and as often as he can possibly manage, Rayne's own happiness, often at the expense of others, comes first. Collects the popular and award-winning webcomic.

I say: The team of Sohmer and deSouza is darned hard to beat. This is a no-brainer.

Hell, let's face it, we're not responsible for anything; including the things we say, do, or think. And if you sue us because you think we are? Well, we're not responsible for that either.
