What does the Comcast / NBC merger mean?

Thursday, December 03, 2009 - 08:12 PM

What does the Comcast acquisition of NBC Universal man to the comics fan? Here's a thought:

When Disney bought Marvel, one of the key questions was about the Universal Studios theme park, a Disney competitor, which features Marvel Comics-licensed characters.

Conventional wisdom was that Disney lawyers would easily handle the situation in favor of the House of Ideas / House of Mouse. In fact, in news stories that came out directly after the deal was announced, Disney commented that they were well aware of the potential problem and were already working on a solution.

However, the Comcast / NBC deal catapults them past the Walt Disney Co. as the nation's largest media company ($51 billion a year in revenue / more than $100 billion in assets).

And part of NBC Universal's holdings is the Universal Studios theme park.

And that levels the playing field considerably.

Hell, let's face it, we're not responsible for anything; including the things we say, do, or think. And if you sue us because you think we are? Well, we're not responsible for that either.
