Before I made Captain Heroic a freelance graphic artist (in this storyline, and revisited again in this one and this one) so I could vent my own professional frustrations in my comic, I relied on a character who originated in Greystone Inn, Gary the Graphic Artist. One of the cool things about my recent move to full-time cartooning has been my ability to have a little flexibility in my scheduling.

And I have no shame admitting to you that I've taken advantage of that flexibility like crazy this summer, spending all kinds of time with my wife and two boys -- something I wasn't able to do too much while I was holding down a full-time job and trying to build my webcomic.

Now, however, as the kids are headed back to school (and as I'm staring down those tuition bills), I'm going to try to devote a little bit of that flexibility to doing some other kinds of projects that I was never able to do.

One of those is original commissioned illustrations.

Another is public speaking.

And another is a limited number of freelance illustration projects that I'm willing to take on.

OK.. another is an abiding desire I have to teach a college course in cartooning, but let's focus a little here.

If you've ever looked at Evil Inc or Courting Disaster and wanted an original piece of art -- drawn to your specifications, complete with all of the blue pencil lines, rendered in archival, black ink on acid-free paper... well, I've been hankerin' to do a few.

Now... about that college class...

One of the most circuitous story lines in Evil Inc history finally wound its way down to Evil-Atom-contemporary Dr. Whoosh. (But not before Iron Dragon was accused of corporate espionage, Memo was shredded, and then resurrected, three documents from previous storylines were re-examined, leading to a character from a single standalone storyline, who was uncovered for his part in the scheme, Dr. Haynus was revealed as being involved, Ted Jenkins (who had previously appeared as an incidental character in weeklong storyline) died, creating a direct path to Oculore, and, finally, Dr. Whoosh.) Instead of being punished for his devious deeds, Dr. Whoosh got promoted -- perhaps because he was the only one who could follow all of that mess. Click here..
