Drive!

Thursday, January 06, 2011 - 12:00 AM

If you've been reading this space, then you know about my very good friend, Dave Kellett. His comic, Sheldon, has been exhibited alongside Evil Inc at more conventions than I could count.

What you might not know is that Dave started a new, weekly, sci-fi comic called Drive.

Now Drive started out as a Saturdays-only feature of Sheldon, but it has amassed such a following -- taking on a life of its own -- that Dave has decided to give it a dedicated site.

Like everything Dave does, the story is jam-packed with quirkiness and charm. Just read the blurb from the Intro page:
DRIVE tells the story of a second Spanish empire, a galactic empire, and it's looming war with a race called "The Continuum of Makers." Humanity has built its empire using technology stolen from the Makers -- and these creatures want it back with an almost religious fervor.

In the brewing war, it's clear that humanity will lose, and lose badly, unless they can find some advantage in battle. That hope arrives in the form of a tiny, mysterious creature who can drive a starship like no one has ever seen. Now all humanity needs to do... is find 10,000 more pilots just like him.

But no one knows where he's from.

We follow the crew of the scout ship Machito, which have been press-ganged into a unique mission by an Emperor they despise: Find this mysterious race, or the empire… ends.

If that's not enough to hook you in, just click over and let the art and the deft graphic-storytelling finish the job.

It's incredible to see Dave flex his creative muscles like this. It's a real treat to see it develop.

And if you jump on now, you'll be caught up with the story by the weekend -- if that long.

Webcomics Weekly, Episode 75

Thursday, January 06, 2011 - 12:00 AM

Join Scott Kurtz, Dave Kellett and me for another Webcomics Weekly. In this episode, we discuss Scott's recent dust-up over The Economist's piece on The Oatmeal. This, of course, leads to a discussion about what makes a comic a comic. And, inevitably, comics snobbery.
