POLL: Five to Pull / One to Pass: Jan. 20

Wednesday, January 20, 2010 - 12:00 AM

Amazing Spider-Man #618
Creative team: Story by Dan Slott; Art by Marcos Martin

Villain to Watch: Zombie Mysterio

They say: 'Un-Murder Incorporated.' Mysterio is back from the dead...and he's not alone! When deceased members of the Maggia crime family return from beyond the grave, the balance of power shifts in their gang war with Hammerhead and the Inner-Demons. Can Spider-Man and crime scene investigator, Carlie Cooper, solve this mystery...before it gets a little too personal? PLUS: Secret sides of both Mr. Negative and J. Jonah Jameson Sr. revealed, a disturbing turn for Aunt May, and the reappearance of another Spider-Villain.

I say: On one hand, it seems to be yet another in a seemingly non-ending series of zombie storylines being offered over the past couple years. On the other hand, it's Dan Slott, who has proven his mettle writing Spidey stories. Throw in a wonderfully campy Spider-Villain from the hero's deep archive, and we've got a solid Pull. Given the preceding week's Rhino storyline, which was full of understated feeling, this comic is going to be dominant on this list for the foreseeable future.

Dark Avengers #13
Creative team: Story by Michael Michael Bendis; Art by Mike Deodato Jr.

Villain to Watch: Norman Osborn... and possibly the Sentry

They say: After years of mystery, the secrets of the Sentry are revealed! How deep is his madness and who is really in control of him? What is the limit of his power, if any? And what deadly mystery surrounds him causing mortals and gods to tremble in fear?

I say: The Sentry mystery has been a fantastic slow burn that has been simmering for the greater part of the Dark Reign arc. I can't say that I'm a tremendous Sentry fan, but it's clear that the character is playing a central role in the Dark Reign saga. If you're not a Dark Avengers fan, feel free to replace this pick with Power Girl from the Honorable Mentions below.

Deadpool Merc with a Mouth #7
Creative team: Story by Victor Gischler; Art by Rob Liefeld, Kyle Baker, Das Pastoras and Bong Dazo

Villain to Watch: TBA

They say: What do you do with a homesick zombie head? Take it back to the zombie universe, of course! Hopping through an interdimensional portal in the Florida swamp with Headpool tucked under his arm, Deadpool soon finds himself bouncing through a series of outlandish alternate realities, each more warped than the last. Wade Wilson, say hello to Major Deadpool, the Deadpool Kid and - va-va-voom - Lady Deadpool.

I say: Finally, the talking zombie Deadpool head takes center stage in this classic run. Again, I'm putting up with the ubiquitous zombie stuff on the strength of the story and its creative team. I mean, Bong Dazo's art on this series has been wonderful. And who can miss a Rob Liefeld / Deadpool turn?

Black Widow and Marvel Girls #3
Creative team: Story by Paul Tobin; Art by Salvador Espin

Villain to Watch: Red Skull

They say: She's S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Natasha Romanoff, and Nick Fury has two missions for his newest recruit. First, find out everything possible about the mysterious Ms. Marvel, and deal with her if deemed necessary. Secondly, infiltrate the Red Skull's organization and discover the location of one of the Skull's 'Sleeper' robots before it spells doom for all mankind. Natasha Romanoff, the Black Widow, is soon to find that combining these two cases is the one way to stay alive. 32 pages, full color.

I say: Tobin's Spider-Man and the Secret Wars was a "bridge episode" last week, so I'm hoping he funneled the rest of his creative powers in to this book. As I've said before, I'm really enjoying Tobin's characterization of Natasha Romanova in this series. The concept of pairing two female characters in a monthly series had to have been a tough sell when it was pitched, but Tobin and crew have delivered.

G-Man Cape Crisis #5
Creative team: Story and art by Chris Giarrusso

Villain to Watch: TBA

They say: G-Man and Great Man embark on a quest to regain their lost powers. Facing opposition and peril at every turn, their toughest challenge may be putting up with each other. It's more action-packed laugh-out-loud kid super hero fun from the Mini-Marvels creator.

I say: My friend Chris' G-Man is fantastic comics storytelling at it's funnest. This story has become a somewhat telling tale of a relationship between two brothers. There are some truly great moments in this series.

Honorable mentions:
Batman Streets of Gotham #8, Dark Wolverine #82, Green Lantern Corps #44, Hulk #19, Incredible Hercules #140, Mighty Avengers #33, Power Girl #8, PvP #43, Spider-Woman #5, Thunderbolts #140, Blackest Night Flash #2.

...And One To Pass...

Barack the Barbarian Fall of Red Sarah #0
Creative team: Story by Larry Hama; Art by Chris Schons

Villain to Watch: The return of blaxploitation

They say: With Merika now safe from the likes of Harry the Viser and Boosh the Dim, Barack the Barbarian must now face Red Sarah as she threatens to destroy the icy villages that she has taken control of. Will Barack even find the need to lift his blade or will the Red Warrior defeat herself? Special Notes: Selling Points: As seen on SNL, featured in Chicago Tribune, NY Post and the Drudge Report!

I say: What better way to celebrate America's first African-American president than to strip him to the waist and put him up a tree in a fur loincloth? If that's not enough to keep you away, remember the golden rule of comic-book solicits: The more they talk about the media coverage of the book, the less they put into the story.

Dishonorable mentions:
Doctor Voodoo Avenger of the Supernatural #4.
