BLC San Diego Comic Jam on the Auction Block[Originally posted by Howard Tayler] So we were sitting at the booth, and somebody (I forget who) suggested that we do a joint piece. Taylor whipped up a Monica-holding-Arther sketch, and then used that as a reference to pencil Monica on a piece of backing-board. Kellet then pencilled Arthur, and handed the sheet to Willis, who pencilled Mike. Guigar put in Doctor Haynus and Scruffy. Straub added Vanderbeam and Vore, again in pencil, and I threw Schlock down in the background. Willis then added the Head Alien, Kellet put Flaco on his head, and since Troop wasn’t around, Willis sketched Ralph over there on the far right.
Then we passed it back around for inking. One at a time, foreground to background, we inked what we’d pencilled (until Troop showed up and inked what Willis had pencilled, and then added the cat). I finished up by tightening a couple of lines on Mike, Vanderbeam, and Vore, and then erasing all the pencils. All told I think the piece took about four hours, what with all the passing back-and-forth.
And now it can be yours. The Blank Label Comics 2006 San Diego Comic-Jam auction is up, featuring this priceless piece, pencilled, inked, and signed by seven of the nine BLC cartoonists. This is truly a one-of-a-kind item, because we don’t get together all that often.
